How to “Spark” Activity, Part II

2016-02-29-Diorama-Characters-3So for awhile now I have been hunting here and there for Native American diorama ‘characters’  in order to add to our ‘scenes’. Or, more specifically, to add to the material that Nuttah could work with, since I was so lame and slow in getting my paper doll characters together. I was looking in the realm of “hobby stores” that might sell ‘diorama’ kits and supplies. I found things, but just didn’t find anything specific enough that would work or that was affordable. All this action occurred on the internet of course, because the traditional brick & mortar hobby stores of my past have left us. However, I go to Michaels Arts & Crafts a lot because I am a knitter and I guess they have evolved into the new kind of hobby store. All that being said, I was in Michaels the other night, and I saw these funny tubes of characters as I breezed by the end of an aisle. They looked like this picture here of one of the tubes; this one containing dragons. I noticed there were several different themed tubes (or TOOBS, as the brand called them) and I hunted for a possible native american one. Bingo: A Western theme, with the following characters:

2016-02-20-112pm-Nuttah-2So there you have it, new diorama characters. I think I bought these on a Thursday, and I set them up on the dresser, just as a random group Friday morning. I didn’t use the things that were specifically ‘western’ such as the Tepee, the buffalo, the wagon or the cowboy. I picked out the 2 native men, the woman with the child, and the white woman. My purpose, of course, was to see if Nuttah would find them interesting enough to work with. They sat there for 3 days with nothing happening. I came in every day, and Nuttah’s ‘angel’ character still sat on the air conditioner staring out the window, and my new diorama characters sat unmoving on the bureau. Until Monday night, when I came home from work. I wrote the following email the next morning to Bob:

March 1, 9:11 AM: “We had a visit last night. I don’t know if you noticed the little diorama characters I had added. They are Plains Indians, but I thought they’d work for the purpose. Another thing I picked up at Michaels along with an egg cooker. Anyway, Nuttah figured them into one of her classic scenes, it is actually quite adorable. I will photograph this morning, but probably not have time to download. The entire scene is on the TV bureau. I can’t imagine who besides me is this stuff selling to. They have a whole series of these characters, in all kinds of themes, not just indians. I guess Michaels is the new Hobby store.”

That is just me speculating on who is buying these TOOBS; they must trot them out to some audience. Must be kids’ toys, I have no other ideas. Anyway, it worked. See the pictures with the captions below for explanation:

2016-02-29-Diorama-arrangement-1

This is the overall scene, and how she figured her original character into the whole thing, along with the 2 hearts. She used the kneeling woman with a fire and a ‘papoose’ in front of her on top of one of the hearts.

This one shows closer where she placed the Indian woman with a child in front of 'her' on one of the hearts.

This one shows closer where she placed the Indian woman with a child in front of ‘her’ on one of the hearts.

And here, I think she used this warrior character to indicate Bob, in front of the Teme/wolf/Niko/Duke characters (who are essentially all one being) and the way this warrior stands on Bob’s special stone is a big clue.2016-02-29-Diorama-arrangement-4

Here is a better closeup of how Bob, the warrior chief figures into the scene, and how she perceives, I think, her father as he was.2016-02-29-Diorama-arrangement-5
And then, after all that, as I was researching the “Toobs” on the Michaels site to find the pictures for the ‘intro’, I found that I had somehow missed that they did in fact have Eastern Indians, the Powhatens! How did I miss that? Perhaps the store I was in didn’t have it, but here are the characters below that are in that Toob. I will buying it as soon as I see it. THAT should ‘spark’ some new activity. My next post is going to be about dreams and parallel lives, due to a recurring dream I keep having, so stay tuned.2016-02-29-Diorama-Characters-2

Dreams, Vibrations, and Bob hears Drums

Nuttah looks out the window

Nuttah & a heart; facing out the window toward the creek behind the house

Thursday night, February 18, coming home from work, I got out of my car in the driveway and immediately noticed the ‘hum/buzz’. I have not heard it in a LONG time, months really; a couple of times since fall, at best. I wondered momentarily what this was about now, as it kind of ‘followed’ me into the house. This was, at one time a couple years ago, a pretty daily event, but not so much now. Not sure what to attribute this to… maybe the ‘travel’ is hard on her as well. O r with her boy, now 3, she doesn’t ‘get out as much’. Or is this what the ‘buzz’ is even about? I often equated it to drumming or music from ‘their time’ bleeding over into ours. I mentioned to Bob that I’d heard it Thursday, I think this was Friday when I said this, and he told me then that he’d been hearing drums and music for almost 2 weeks. He hadn’t said anything til now so I was surprised. At about that time, I’d gone upstairs to our bedroom and I found that Nuttah was now on the air conditioner facing out the window, looking toward the creek in the back. There was a heart in front of her, pointed outward also and the picture is included here.

Dups arranged on table

The Niko-Duke-Teme-Teme combo that inhabits Niko, is again arranged with Bob’s stone on his bedside table.

Then on Saturday, we were doing stuff around the house, here and there; our usual Saturday chores and what-not. Bob had taken a clock-radio he found in the basement up to try out the radio on his side of the bed. He can’t get reception on his side well enough to hear Coast to Coast at night and sometimes he wishes he could, but this radio was no better. I went up a bit later and I noticed the dog-cutouts were again all arranged like they are in this picture. Bob said when he was testing the radio, they’d all been just laying around the table, knocked over since my last post about it Feb. 10.

The only other thing to mention is that in the early hours of dawn Saturday morning, I had an odd dream about a cat. It was not one of our cats (we still have two) but a similar one in black and white. What was notable about this dream is that it was apparent to me that the cat teleported somehow. Like it was in one world, and then suddenly it was in another, and the ‘other’ is the one I was seeing it in. I’m not sure how this was obvious, but again, it’s a dream, and that’s how dreams are. I’ve gotten much better at remembering them lately, but I’m making a specific effort about doing this every night, and then recording them when I can remember. It seems to get easier as you do.

Bob mentioned today that last night, he had one of his ‘travel through history’ dreams. He was flying over the places he ‘was shown’, and able to look from current times back through millenia into history. I wish he would write this up while fresh in his mind

She visits and leaves an arrangement

We came home Friday night, Feb. 5th to a change in the arrangement. Four of the dog-characters: Niko, Duke and two wolves were combined into one character on Bob’s bedside table, along with Bob’s special stone. Which reminds me… I was watching a program on perhaps one of the history channels where a guy who is a geologist or paleontologist? can analyze the age of carvings in stones. For instance, petroglyphs would lend themselves to this, as in Nuttah’s stone petroglyph. I wish I could remember his name because I would look him up, however, I doubt that I’d let the stone leave here and mail it to him for analysis so I guess remembering who he was really doesn’t matter. Although I am really curious about that stone.

Here is the arrangement of Bob’s side of bed:
2016-02-05-Niko-Duke-Teme-Teme

Here is another version of the same scene (flash didn’t go off, so it’s pretty orange). I spread out the paper characters, so it’s more obvious how they are piled up:

2016-02-05-Niko-Duke-Teme-Teme-3

2016-02-05-Nuttah-on-tableOn my side of the bed was another arrangement. I have pictured it here to the left. No flash on this one either, so it appears more ‘orange”. On my side was Nuttah’s character with a heart in front and 2 little tins of my moisturizer behind, looking in this picture for all the world like a set of wings. I asked Bob if, when he came home earlier, he’d had any sense of her presence or if the dogs had acted any differently at all. “No, not a thing”, he said.

So we were left to wonder what this unexpected visit was about. Ha – unexpected… as if any of them are “expected”. Unusual and always fascinating, so I continue to just log things as they happen.

The “dups” are rearranged with their wolf alter-egos

Remember, in our household, “Dups” = Dogs

Bob and I exchanged these emails on the morning of January 21, referring to the night before:
Bob: “Did wake to a visit, well the dups woke me with severe whining, all three whining in unison. Seemed very brief, but Nuttah was there with Teme. Don’t know what it was about, seemed brief, actually, I don’t know that, it was brief while I was awake. Lu has the silliest of whines, she needs to work on that. Niko and Red have proper whines.”

I wrote Bob back, same morning:
“Yes I knew there was a visit, there is a new arrangement on the TV dresser. What time did that happen? It seems to be all the dups and wolves piled up; she used the bark hut behind it all and she’s in the front with a heart on top of your stone facing the bed. What does it all mean? How is Teme doing, does he have hip issues still? Or you don’t know.”

I am really not sure what the nature of this visit was. Only the dogs (dups) know and they’re not talking. I asked Lucy later, she just looked at me and cocked her head funny. She seems to understand when I talk to her, understand  a lot more than we probably give her credit for. Here are pictures of what was on the bureau (and still is as I write this on 1/23:

A new arrangement with all the Niko, Red and Lucy characters that I provided.

A new arrangement with all the Niko, Red and Lucy characters that I provided.

Then I noticed that little Lu was pared with a wolf-pup! So is she just like Niko/Duke/Teme, and has an alter-ego that is a wolf?

Then I noticed that little Lu was pared with a wolf-pup! So is she just like Niko/Duke/Teme, and has an alter-ego that is a wolf?

If you click on the picture on the right, the one I have the pink circle around, you can see that Lucy has behind her (combined with her) one of the wolf-pups. Is this her wolf alter-ego? According to Bob, Niko now contains the essence of Duke and also the Teme (wolf) from their time. In fact, if something were to happen to Niko, it would also happen to the wolf (and vice versa) That much we do know. Both Niko and Teme had hip problems that started at the same time. With Teme, he got hurled against something by a bear, Bob thinks, and Niko started having serious problems with his hips/back legs then. We started taking him to a vet and having laser-treatments and acupuncture to bring him around. It really seemed to work too, at least for a year. This all started in late fall of 2014, and he did okay until recently. Now he is suffering again, and I’m afraid we may have to revisit getting some kind of ‘cart’ for Niko. He needs something like this:

If Niko had one of these, we could walk him and he could move around better. This even looks like him.

If Niko had one of these, we could walk him and he could move around better. This even looks like him. If Niko would tolerate being hooked into this thing, I think he’d really benefit from the action.

There was one other ‘event’ in January that bears writing about, and it took place on January 9th. Our kids were taking Bob out for his 60th birthday celebration. We were to meet them out at a venue in NJ, and then Stewie was going to spend the night here with us, although Bob didn’t know this until the day of the celebration. We had a great time out and then, as planned, Stewie came to spend the night. In the morning, after having more or less forgotten about his usual, timely ‘character’ arrival, I checked in the places it would normally show up and there was no sign of Stew. I chalked this up to Nuttah not picking up from Bob that Stewie was coming to spend the night, since the whole thing had developed as a surprise.

However, I mentioned this to Bob, and I guess he went and had a look around, and brought me out to the foyer to show me this:

There he was, his character showing up as he always does when Stew visits in person. We then went out to say goodbye when Stew was leaving, and by the time we came in the character was already gone.

How to ‘spark’ activity

So I had a little time off between Christmas and New Year’s this year. It ends tomorrow (1/4/16) but I had a nice 11-day stretch of vacation time, which I spent at home. It’s always nice to just sort of hang out at home and not have to work; I could get used to this in no time. I did do a lot of chores and cleaning/organizing, a fair amount of visiting, and things that I normally can’t do because about 12 hours of my work days are occupied with either getting ready for work, driving to or from work, or actually being at work. So that leaves little else. One of the little ‘projects’ that I’ve put off for a long time and have thought about doing, I actually did. I made paper cut-outs of the newer dogs in our house. It has been that long; all the dogs we have now were not ours when all this started. I know that probably sounds like a small thing, but when everything else is so pressing, doing this was no small feat. And with this, I’d also like to introduce a new face in our dog-household, and that is little “Lu”. “Lu” is Lucy, the Yorkie. A Yorkie! you might think, amongst our German Shepherd and wolf-hybrid. Yes, it’s Lucy; Yorkie rescue, and she holds her own with Niko and Red, and another dog we adopted last February that we call “Fred”, short for Winifred.

3 of the dogs. Red on the left, Niko on the right, and (not to scale), Lucy the Yorkie in the middle

3 of the dogs: Red on the left, Niko on the right, and (not to scale), Lucy the Yorkie in the middle

I made cutouts of Niko, Red and Lucy. All 3 have at one time or other been part of “events”. Fred has not, so I didn’t make a cutout for Fred. The 3 of them are pictured here to the left, and the caption tells who they are. This was on the 29th and I set them up that same day on the bureau in our bedroom with Nuttah.

Pictures of the dog/wolf arrangement

And here is how I placed them on the bureau. I added the original cutouts I still had of the wolves, and then there is also Duke in this picture, just to the left of Nuttah. And a blue Oaxacan (Mexican) rabbit, but that object ‘lives’ on the bureau – it’s always there

We were out for a bit on Thursday, 12/31, which is New Year’s Eve, but it was early, we didn’t want to be out late. We were having an early dinner at a local pub, because we wanted to get home and in before any New Year’s Eve madness started. Bob at one point during dinner said to me, “Nuttah is visiting right now.”

“What?, How do you know?”, I asked.

“I just see her by the creek with her boy”, Bob replied.

“What is she doing?”, I asked.

“Nothing really, I just had a very clear image of her there, and she somehow communicated that to me.”

So you can imagine that when we got home, I made a beeline to the bedroom to check the bureau to see if any changes. And voila! Yes, there was, see picture below. So what has changed, is that all the dogs were pulled in tighter to Nuttah. She is down now at their level, and she piled a heart on top of Bob’s stone. But the most interesting thing, that Bob had to point out to me, because I didn’t see it right away, was that the paper character of Duke (the shepherd we had prior to Niko that passed away) was SHARING Niko’s support stand. Duke had been inserted into the stand as if he and Niko shared the same – well, body, I guess. That is what Bob has been saying all along, that Duke lives still inside of Niko, as well as the Teme wolf that lives in Nuttah’s world. The 3 are all part of one. I don’t know how this works, but this is what Nuttah is illustrating by combining the 2 shepherds. In the picture below, you can kind of see Duke’s ears behind Niko’s head.

Changes on the Bureau

The changes to the arrangement. Disregard the owl to the right of the arrangement, I had placed that there too, but it really doesn’t figure into anything, except for the fact that Nuttah didn’t disturb it.

And then in this picture below, I came in closer to try to better illustrate the little scene. What both of us missed, because the cutout is smaller than the other two, is that BEHIND Niko and Duke, one of the wolf cutouts was also sharing the stand. So she HAD combined the 3 all in one. Bob seems to know, when he is visiting ‘there’, that the wolf/dog he interacts with is Niko/Duke/Teme – the 3 of them all inhabiting the one. And now Nuttah has substantiated this with the cutouts. I still plan to work with more cutouts/diorama objects, because it seems like the best way for her to communicate ideas and relationships. And I do like to ‘spark’ some activity.

“Other Witnesses” – Again

There has not been A LOT going on, but I have now accumulated enough things to make a post about it. Not that any one of these ‘events’ did not warrant their own post at the time, but I just decided to lump them together, for both time and interest’s sake. What sparked this impetus to finally “group-post” these events, was a text from Bob on March 14 at 6:10 pm. I’m at work, and I read,

“Dave had an incident.”

A little panic welled up in me because I knew contractor “Dave” had been at our house that day installing a door. With my compromised close-up vision I initially read the text as “Dave had an accident”. “Oh no”, I was thinking, “What happened?” Auto accident or did he do something bad while installing our door (cut off a finger?). But then I re-read the text and understood the right word – “incident”. Not much better really than “accident”, depending what it was. So what was this incident? This could have many implications. It does not escape my thoughts that leaving Dave (or any contractor) alone in our house working could potentially be problematic. What if Nuttah (and company) decided for some reason they did not want the person here? It would not take much to scare most people away, especially if objects started relocating in front of them. I’m pretty sure I would hightail it out of here. (Something else pretty weird just happened – Contractor Dave just called as I’m in the middle of writing this. It was to confirm another project to start tomorrow, but how weird that just as I’m writing this…) Anyway, back to what happened. I text back to Bob, “WHAT????”

He did not answer. I assumed it was too much to get into via text, and I was right. I would have to wait for our nightly phone call. So this was Dave’s “incident”. Bob described how they were both outside in the driveway. We don’t have many trees in our yard, we are surrounded by trees, but there’s only a handful left that are actually “in our yard”. It is, of course, winter, so the trees are bare. We have this one tree that is an ornamental maple; it has a tiny red leaf and I believe they call it a “Japanese Maple”. Beautiful tree, I think it has a spectacular shape and color, but it is small. Fully grown by now, I don’t think it’s even 20 ft. high or wide. Not sure why, but Bob and Dave are both roughly facing this tree. It’s toward the street, so maybe they were looking at something coming down the street. All of a sudden, out of nowhere, Bob sees the Giant White Bird come in and it awkwardly lands in the small Japanese maple. Now you can imagine that a bird nearly the size of a dog, would do something to a tree with branches that small and thin, and weirdly, this was the only part that Dave could see, he could not actually see the Giant White Bird, he could only see the effect it was having on the delicate tree branches.

“What is GOING ON WITH THAT TREE!?”, Dave exclaimed.

From what Dave could see, the branches were swinging wildly up and down, nearly breaking with the weight of the bird.

“What is DOING that!?”, Dave asks with amazement.

This is my rendition of the large white bird, landing on what amounted to a twig. Imagine the result.

This is my rendition of the large white bird, landing on what amounted to a twig. Imagine the result.

Bob, on the other hand, is more focused on the BIRD, not the branches, but realizes immediately that Dave can’t see the actual bird, only the result of the heavy bird landing. And what is it doing there, why did it come in now? Bob glances over at our side door off the driveway where Niko was. Up to this point, Niko had been agitatedly looking out at Bob and Dave and wanting to be outside with them. Now, as the bird lands and locks eyes with Niko, he goes silent and solemn. This is not the first time that Bob has witnessed this ‘communication’ between Niko and the “Giant White Bird”. Something always changes in Niko with these encounters. But Dave can’t see the bird – he can only see the tree branches swinging wildly. Bob’s explanation to Dave?

“Oh, must have been a chunk of ice that fell and hit it”, Bob tries to explain, thinking fast. Well, there is no ice left in any trees, and no ice on any branches, so Dave says, “I don’t think so”. But since for him, he has no explanation whatsoever that makes sense, he just marvels over what just happened, and they go back to their conversation.

Just a reminder, contractor “Dave” is the same one that sat out on our deck with Bob one afternoon, and had another “encounter” of a sort. I am hopeful that he does not remember that one, because if he does, he will begin to think odd thoughts about this property. Here is a link to that blog entry, when Dave bolted from the deck thinking that the unfinished beer he was in the middle of drinking was too strong: https://whosetimeisit.wordpress.com/2012/07/17/bob-a-guest-have-a-mutual-sighting/

Before this “incident” written about above, there were 2 other things that happened in March. I took pictures of two scenes in early March; one was taken 3/1, the other 3/9. Unfortunately, I don’t have any comments about these two arrangements in any emails, so I’m not really sure if they relate to any specific incident. I do vaguely remember asking Bob on the 2nd one if he “felt any presence”, because I think he’d have either been in the room or in the bathroom when it happened. However, he had not. All I can say about it at this point, is that she was “around” to make her presence known, and that the arrangements must mean something, but we know not what.

A Weekend of Events

Tonight it is Wednesday, January 8, 2014 and I came home to loud buzzing in the driveway. It followed me to the mailbox, and it followed me into the house and upstairs, and now I hear it dimly in the office as I sit here typing. I’ve already checked for changes upstairs, and things are still the way they were placed this weekend. Bob had reported Niko being distracted and unsettled earlier, last night it was that way too. But I get ahead of myself… going back to the weekend:

The bark hut was left by itself where it was propped in front of the TV

The bark hut was left by itself where it was propped in front of the TV

It was the first weekend of January, 2014. First, Bob went out to the apartment on Friday night, Jan. 3rd and heard lots of drumming and rattles. Then, we went out the night of Saturday, January 4th, and when we came home, there was a change in the display of objects upstairs in the bedroom. All but the bark-hut had been moved to be repositioned on my bedside table. I will add a picture of that change. And then Sunday the 5th, again in the apartment, Bob had to turn off lights that we did not leave on. It occurred to me as we were talking about these latest,  but relatively minor events, that maybe the drums and rattles that Bob heard over there Friday night were part of a ceremony. Because it was exactly one year ago Friday that I posted this one:

Jan. 3, 2013 – The Day it Happened

It might be hard to see but a ruler registered 7.5" of snow Friday, Jan. 3

It might be hard to see but a ruler registered 7.5″ of snow Friday, Jan. 3

And remember, the “Day it Happened” was the day Bob’s “buddy” was finally annihilated. Knowing that the Lenape are very much conscious of the ceremonial aspects of life in the form of “events”, I was pretty sure that there was something going on Friday to commemorate it. Why wasn’t Bob part of it? Were the pups? Niko? We had been home all day: it snowed heavily Friday. Bob had a rare planned day off, I ended up calling out because of the weather. Yeah, pretty lame, but I also knew it was going to be a really slow day. I don’t do that often, but with Bob being home, it made sense. This would have been the day that something would happen regarding a “ceremony”. And maybe it did, and maybe it just didn’t work out that Bob or Niko could be involved. Remember, we have been made aware that Bob can only “go” a limited number of times.

I still have not made my new characters. I had lots of time off, but I also had lots of things to do. Maybe this weekend. Here is the picture I promised of the way things had changed on my bedside table:

When Stewie leaves, his character follows

The arrangement found on my bedside table when I got home from holiday party

The arrangement found on my bedside table when I got home from holiday party

Stewie and his girlfriend (I’ll call her “Minsi” – a Lenape word, hope she doesn’t object) left to go to work the morning after Christmas Day, but Stewie decided to come out again that evening to spend the night. I wondered if his character would disappear or stay; does Nuttah “know” when he’s returning? She seemed to, because even while Stew was gone all day Thursday (12/26) at work, his character remained where Bob had seen it “come in” on my bedside table. We went out to dinner Thursday evening (Yes, even with all that leftover turkey!), and then Stew showed us how to stream movies on our TV. Sad how we can never figure this out for ourselves. After Stew’s visit overnight, he left Friday afternoon. I kept an eye on the arrangement upstairs as I could, and by the time I got up Saturday morning, he was gone.

The arrangement is now on the TV dresser (a very old TV)

The arrangement is now on the TV dresser (a very old TV)

Bob and I had much to do Saturday, and when we returned from dinner late Saturday night, there was a change from the arrangement on my bedside table:  Stew was still gone, but also the entire arrangement had been moved! It was now on our bedroom TV table; a dresser in the corner. It was basically in the same configuration as before, but now right in front of the TV. I’ve included a picture here, and compare it to the thumbnail in the paragraph above. The only real difference is that Bob’s special stone remains on my bedside table and is not part of this arrangement.

Bob had no explanation of this new change, and said he did not feel the presence of Nuttah, nor had he throughout the day. There had only been that very brief encounter when she breezed through to place Stewie’s character on Christmas Day. We’re left to try to interpret. I know it’s where our eyes are always directed, she is literally in front of the TV controls and I have to use the remote, otherwise I would upset this arrangement. Trying to get our attention? I don’t know, but I do know that she has it.

What I found when I got home

It is always an unusual, large, white bird that comes to "talk" to Niko

It is always an unusual, large, white bird that comes to “talk” to Niko

So I mentioned in the last post that I came home to something the night of the “Holiday Party”.  Something had gone on earlier between Bob, Niko, and external forces, and there had obviously been some kind of “visit”. Niko had another encounter with that white bird; that seems to be the way “they” communicate with him. I don’t know what was said, or why, but the visit really seemed to be about him. Much to my surprise, I was not being vilified for asking Bob to get Frank out of the mix of our pups. It just did not seem to be working, although that was a surprise too, since we thought that Frank was more or less “brought” to us as a result of Bob’s dream. But I guess we don’t always read the right message into what’s going on. That is really pretty hard to do sometimes with all this weirdness; to get the message right every time. (I’m open to suggestions!!)

At any rate, of course the first thing I checked coming in the house was my desk. There was nothing new or unusual there, so I went up to check the bedside tables in our bedroom. And it was on mine that I was to find this display. I will put a large version of the picture below, and then continue my commentary below it:

The arrangement found on my bedside table when I got home from holiday party

The arrangement found on my bedside table when I got home from holiday party

It starts with the bark-hut, and in front of that is layered all of the dog/wolf pictures that I’ve made and used to date. Then Nuttah positions her character in front of the dogs/wolves, and lastly, we have the pewter turtle and Bob’s special stone that came from “her” time.  This is arranged to face where I would be if I was in the bed. What does it all mean? I asked Bob the next night to take a look at it, and see if he could “get it”, especially since he’d been part of the communication the night it happened. He had nothing to add. I’m stumped. But I do believe that it means Niko is being celebrated, and miraculously, I am NOT being hung out to dry for Frank not being here anymore. I am guessing that they are accepting of it, thank goodness. Apparently, Niko is our star, and our protector, and maybe they felt he was being threatened. They appeared that night for a reason. The morning after Frank was no longer here, I took all the pups out as usual, and Niko just tore into Red, as if she was now the stand-in for Frank. Niko had just been so wound up by the aggression of Frank that he couldn’t even forget it the next day. Luckily, Red knows how to take all this in stride, and her lack of winding up against him settled things down. (Wish she would behave like that when I’m walking her on a leash) It took a couple of outings for things to calm down to their normal level.

Bob’s Recurring Dream is Realized

Okay, we have a new Pup. This new one makes 5 – yes, count them, FIVE dogs in our house. You might think it is totally nuts, and after my sleepless night of laying awake listening to new-pup’s excessive barking, I might say it’s crazy too. But how could we deny this one a home? Read on…

It started with a picture text I got from Bob while I was still at work and Bob was home. It was pretty hard to see, my phone displays pictures about as big as a postage stamp. It came in on 12/2 at 4:56 PM, with the message: “Dream issue has been resolved.”

I stared at this tiny picture on my phone, trying to glean what had happened, how had it been resolved? The pups in the picture looked like Niko, Red, and the new foundling, Sprite. Nothing new there.

At 4:57, I texted to Bob: “HOW was it resolved?”

Bob, 5:15 pm: “We have a new pup. That was the wolf pup (from the dream). He was being beaten by two dark men, jumped the fence when I stopped the car and ran to me with them in pursuit.”

6:25 pm: “Oh, so he’s ours now?”

(The time delay was because I was still at work and couldn’t do anything on my phone for a time.)

Finally, at about 8 PM or so, I was able to talk to Bob about what had happened. As Bob was leaving work on Monday, from the “not-too-nice area” where the plant is, he was pulling up to a stop sign with a couple of cars in front of him. Adjacent to him are several fenced-in vacant lots, some being used by residents for summer gardening, now abandoned and everything left has died and is just dry stalks, brush, gardening stakes, mixed with some bare straggly trees. In the midst of this, he saw two large black men pummeling a dog, like they were trying to kill it. Several things went through Bob’s mind about how he was going to intervene (it wasn’t “if” he was going to, it was “how”) but then, as he’s getting somewhat closer, the dog – a German Shepherd – locks eyes with him. As soon as the eyes locked, the shepherd had a resurgence of energy, despite the beating and the strength of these 2 brutes, and he somehow broke free. He scaled the fence in a deer-like leap, with a purple leash still attached and trailing behind him, thankfully not tripping him up on the fence-stakes. Bob, immediately realizing the metaphoric parallel to the dream he’s now had about 5 times, pushed open his passenger side door, the disgusting brutes in pursuit as nebulous dark shapes, and the dog makes a bee-line through the traffic and just hurls himself into Bob’s car, shaking and panting and totally freaked out. Bob reaches over, shuts and locks the door, and zooms off, with obscenities and gesticulations being hurled after him in his wake.

And that is why we now have 5 dogs, and why we feel a special connection to this new one also, especially because of Bob’s prophetic dream. It was interesting the way he immediately knew that “this was what it meant”, this was “the event” that he’d been dreaming. Metaphors, yes, but the “wolf-pup” dream nevertheless.

Another odd thing that happened, was that when Bob got him home to our house and first had him out in the yard with the other pups, (this introduction went surprisingly well), Bob looked back toward the house and all of a sudden, simultaneously, ALL the lights went on in the apartment. I asked Bob if he thought this was to indicate “approval”, and he agreed, that’s probably what it was. He had to go into the apartment, and turn off literally every light that is there, even the ceiling fan was turning. All had been off and dark when he’d gone outside.

That first night, however, with this new pup home was torture for me. He began in the basement; our other two shepherds sleep upstairs in the bedroom with us. The new addition started howling at about 3 AM or so. Then, after Bob left for work, he howled and barked non-stop. At about 4:30 AM, I finally went down and retrieved him from the basement. He was so freaked out still, he wouldn’t let me get near him. He was so shy, and so down-trodden, and so submissive, it was hard to get near him. I let him out in the yard, and I had visions of him leaping the fence again, I knew it would be an easy jump for a dog this big. He’s actually taller than Niko, but he’s so malnourished his ribs show. He is probably about 25 lbs. underweight. When I saw how completely scared and skittery he is, I was shocked that he just jumped into Bob’s car, like he knew him. Maybe in some strange way he did know him. After I brought him back in, I thought he’d be better upstairs with the other pups, so I brought him up to the bedroom. He ended up sleeping the next couple of hours on the bed, and that night, I got all but about 4 hours of decent sleep. It was an awful Tuesday as a result.

Tuesday morning, my first day with him, as I had them all out in the yard to “do their business”, I started calling him “Frank”, and Bob is calling him that too. Here is the skinny picture of “Frank”; sometimes to me, he looks more like a greyhound because he is so underweight, but I don’t think it will be too hard to bring him back. I just keep thinking of what his awful fate might have been if Bob had not appeared at that exact moment, but maybe in some way it was all “scripted”, and “meant to happen”. Obviously there is something at work here.
